The Early Years Foundation Stage welfare requirements which were introduced in September 2008 have set minimum standards for training and qualifications as a pre-condition for Ofsted registration, namely that:
Childminders must have attended a childcare training course within six months of registration and must hold a current paediatric first aid certificate at the point of registration. First aid training must be approved by the local authority and consistent with the guidance set out in the Practice Guidance for the Early Years Foundation Stage
In registered settings other than childminding settings, all supervisors and managers must hold a full and relevant level 3 qualification (as defined by the Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC)) and half of all other staff must hold a full and relevant level 2 qualification (as defined by CWDC).
Full details of the EYFS Requirements (2008) can be found on the DCSF website.
Nannies & qualifications
Nannies at present are not required by law to hold any childcare qualifications however if they wish to become part of the Voluntary Ofsted Childcare Register (OCR) they have the same requirements as a childminder, the only difference being is that they are caring for the child/ren in their own family home.
Voluntary Ofsted Childcare Register Requirements
Tinies recommend that as the employer gets the tax benefit that the employer pays all or part of the costs towards a Nanny becoming registered.
The estimated costs:
Application fee - £103 (includes the CRB and verification service operated by the post office). Please note a nanny does not require an additional CRB if he/she has had one completed in the last 3 years by Ofsted
Public Liability Insurance - ranges between £70 - £90
12 hour Paediatric First Aid - approx £120 (unless the nanny already holds a valid certificate in the last 3 years)
Childcare training is a government priority. You may find your local Early Years Development Partnership has money available to fund your course.
